10 Tips to Look Slimmer in Photos

1. Start with Self-Love and Acceptance

The journey to looking and feeling great in photos starts with self-love and acceptance. Remember that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Embrace your unique body and appreciate it for what it is. Confidence is the most attractive accessory you can wear in any photo. It took me a long time to step out from behind my camera and into the lens but I am so happy I finally did. Don't waste any more time on negative head trash. Schedule a self-love portrait session right away.

2. Dress for Success

Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Dark-colored clothing tends to have a slimming effect, but don’t be afraid to wear vibrant colors or patterns that express your personality. The key is to wear what makes you feel your best.

I can almost always be found in jeans and a t-shirt. It's what I'm most comfortable in so it's typically what I'm wearing in self portraits. Dress for success doesn't exactly translate to a suit or something extra for everyone. Dress for what will make you feel happy and confident.

3. Mind Your Posture

Good posture not only makes you look taller but also slimmer. Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Imagine a string pulling the top of your head toward the ceiling. Engaging your core muscles can help you maintain this posture.

4. Angle It Right

Positioning yourself at a slight angle to the camera can create a more flattering look. Avoid standing square to the lens, as it can make you appear wider. Try turning your body slightly and placing one foot in front of the other to create a pleasing curve.

5. Play with Perspective

Adjusting the camera’s angle can work wonders. Ask the photographer (or adjust your smartphone) to shoot from a slightly higher position. This can elongate your body and create a more slender appearance. Or shoot from a slightly lower position for a hero angle.

6. Be Mindful of Your Chin

To avoid the dreaded double chin, subtly push your face forward and slightly down or slightly up. This elongates your neck and defines your jawline. It may feel a bit awkward at first, but the results are worth it.

7. Natural and Relaxed Expressions

A genuine smile is the best way to look and feel beautiful in photos. Think of something that genuinely makes you happy, and let your smile shine. Relaxed facial expressions appear more natural and inviting.

8. Lighting Matters

Well-lit photos can make a world of difference. Natural light is often the most flattering, but if you’re indoors, find soft, diffused lighting to reduce harsh shadows.

9. Embrace Photo Editing Thoughtfully

While it’s important to love and accept yourself as you are, photo editing tools can help enhance your photos if desired. Just remember to use them with a light touch, preserving your natural beauty. For those who don't use Photoshop, my favorite free app for glamour editing is Facetune.

10. The Power of Movement

Static poses are great, but adding a touch of movement to your photos can infuse them with life and energy. Whether it’s twirling in a flowing dress, walking naturally, or simply adjusting your posture slightly during a series of shots, movement can create dynamic, candid, and captivating images.

  • Candid Walks: Capture the beauty of movement by walking naturally toward or away from the camera. This simple action can add a sense of purpose and dynamism to your photos.

  • Dancing: Express your joy through dance! Let loose, sway to the music, and capture the moments when you’re lost in the rhythm. These photos radiate happiness and vivacity.

  • Action Shots: Engage in activities you love, whether it’s playing sports, running, or hiking. Action shots not only show your passion but also add an adventurous spirit to your photo collection.

  • Hair Toss or Flip: A playful hair toss can create a striking visual effect and draw attention to your facial features. It’s a fun and effortless way to bring life to your photos.

Move naturally and confidently. This not only makes your photos more engaging but also helps you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, showcasing your authentic self.

Remember that your worth is not determined by your appearance in photos.

The key is to feel comfortable and happy in your own skin. Your authenticity and self-love will radiate in every photograph you take.
